Rules of the card game Toepen
Toepen is a classic Dutch card game for 3 to 8 players involving tactics, bluffing and winning the last trick. It is played with a reduced deck of 32 cards (7 to Ace).
You can play Toepen online against the computer, with friends, or both.
Below you will find the full rules and some variants.
Goal of the game
- The goal is to collect as few (penalty) points as possible.
- The winner of a round is the player who wins the last trick.
- You may increase the stake at any moment by “toeping”.
- The player who first reaches the maximum number of points loses the game.
Cards and order
- The game uses 32 cards: 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king, ace.
- Order from low to high: jack, queen, king, ace, 7, 8, 9, 10.
- There are no points per card or trick; only the last trick matters.
Preparation
- Each player receives 4 cards.
- The player left of the dealer starts the first trick.
- A player may exchange their 4 cards for 4 new ones (if available).
This is justified if you have 4 picture cards (J, Q, K, A), but exchanging is always allowed. - Other players may check whether the exchange was justified. If unjustified, the player receives 1 point from each checker. If justified, each checker receives 1 point.
Gameplay
- The first player plays a card; this sets the suit. Others must follow suit if possible.
- The highest card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one.
- The winner is the player who wins the last trick; all other tricks do not matter.
- Each round starts with a stake of 1 point.
- Anyone may toep at any moment, increasing the stake by 1 point. Each player chooses whether to continue.
- Players who stop after a toep receive the current stake and drop out of the round.
- After the 4th trick, the winner receives no points; all other players receive the current stake.
Scoring and winner
- Each player starts with 0 points.
- The game ends when a player reaches 20 points.
- The player with the fewest points wins.
Variants
- The maximum number of points can be adjusted (e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20).
- Toepen can be limited to a maximum number of rounds.
- The option to exchange cards can be disabled.
