Rules of the card game Thirty-One
Thirty-One, also known as 31, is a popular card game that can be played with 2 to 9 players. The goal is to get as close as possible to a total of 31 points with three cards.
You can play Thirty-One against the computer, against friends, or a combination of both.
Below you will find the full rules and several variants.
Cards and values: 7 through Ace
- Ace: 11 points.
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): 10 points.
- Other cards: their normal value (e.g. 7 = 7 points).
- The value is counted per suit (hearts, spades, diamonds, clubs).
- If all 3 cards have the same rank (e.g. three eights), the score is 30½.
Preparation
- All players start with 5 coins.
- Everyone receives 3 cards and 3 cards are placed face down on the table.
- The dealer may choose to keep their three cards or exchange them with the three face-down cards on the table.
Gameplay
- The player to the dealer’s left starts.
- Each player may exchange one card from their hand with one card from the table.
- If a player believes they have enough points, they may pass.
- A player may exchange all three cards with the cards on the table; after this, they automatically pass.
- The game ends when a player reaches exactly 31 points, or when all players have passed their turn.
Scoring and Winner
- The player with the highest value wins the round.
- The loser of a round loses one coin.
- In case of a tie, all players with the lowest value lose a coin.
- The first player to lose all their coins receives a one-time extra coin: the candy coin, also known as the “kick seat” or “bok”.
- Players without coins are eliminated from the game.
- The winner is the last remaining player.
Variants, adjustable when starting the game
- The number of starting coins can be set from 1 to 10.
- Once a player passes, all other players get one final turn to improve their hand.
